Boullé and Townsend win a best paper prize
Dr. Nicolas Boullé (University of Cambridge) and Professor Alex Townsend (Cornell University) won the 2024 SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Best Paper Prize for their co-authored manuscript “Learning Elliptic Partial Differential Equations with Randomized Linear Algebra” in Foundations of Computational Mathematics, 2022. The paper on operator learning extends the classical randomized singular value decomposition to infinite dimensions and shows how to use such techniques to answer important questions on learning solution operators associated with elliptic PDEs. The SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Best Paper Prize (SIAG/LA Best Paper Prize) is awarded every three years to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper, as determined by the selection committee, on a topic in applicable linear algebra in the four calendar years preceding the award year.
